This term the junior school are doing a NZ author study. Each week we will be looking at some New Zealand authors and reading their books. This week Room 19 were focusing on Lynley Dodd who wrote the famous Hairy Maclary books. Here is some of the kids responses to characters in her books. Hercules Morse is my favourite dog from the books because he is the giant of the team because he is fat. Hercules Morse is the fattest dog who jumps up high from Scarface Claw because he is so scared of him. By Roman Schnitzel von Krum is my favourite dog from the books because he is like the shape of a sausage. He is little and funny because his tummy can nearly touch the ground and he has got short, little legs that can’t jump very high. By Monty Hercules Morse is my favourite dog from the books because he is gigantic like  a big horse. He can run very fast like a car and he is the biggest dog of the group. Art Exibition 2017 "Taniwha in the Moana"

This year Room 19 focused on using mixed media to complete their pieces of art to tie in with the BLUE theme at school. First we explored shading and blending with paint on corrugated cardboard. We wanted to create some real life like waves. Next we used pastel to draw our taniwha and coloured them in. We had to go over the outline with black indian ink to make them stand out. Next we had to cut out the waves to make it look like the real moana.  The last step was to use coloured tissue paper to collage our sun set background. Viola there you have it. Our masterpiece is now complete!

Some writing to share...

Here is some writing that Room 19 would like to share with you about what we have learnt so far about growing seeds and plants. To grow a plant I would need a watering can, sunlight and also space so the seeds do not fight over the sun or the rain. They need some air so it can breathe. Plants needs soil to cover the seeds and roots so it grow when it has had sun and water. After that it will grow bigger and bigger. By Raema Plants need water otherwise they will die. They need spoil too so they keep safe. They need sun and air. You need a seed to grow a plant. Nutrients is food for the plants and it is found in soil. Remember to pull the weeds out. Sun is light for the plants. Plants could have seeds inside them and that makes them grow, grow, grow. Some plants grow into fruits that have seeds.
